What Monmouth Beach does to a window
Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright are the saltiest glass on our Long Branch routes. The oceanfront homes and condo buildings along Ocean Avenue take spray straight over the sea wall on every east wind and dry a white film within days of a cleaning, and a nor'easter carries it clear across Route 36 to the river side, where the homes on the Shrewsbury River and the Channel Club Tower take a second dose of brackish haze and an exhaust film off the boat traffic in the channel. On the sun side the film bakes on, and once it bakes it starts to etch.
The sand and the wind are the second problem. The strip is a few hundred yards wide, and blowing sand off the beach and the sea wall scratches the lower panes and piles in the sliding-door tracks on every windy afternoon, heaviest in the fall and winter nor'easter season. In winter Ocean Avenue and Route 36 are brined before every storm, and the spray off passing traffic dries into a white crust on the lower glass of every house along the road. The beach club season brings the summer traffic, and the humid summer grows mildew inside the porch screens and in the shaded corners of the frames.
Most Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright homes do best on an every-two-months plan, and oceanfront glass usually wants monthly from October through April when the wind is up. River-side homes sometimes stretch to quarterly in summer. Many of these houses sit closed for weeks in the off-season, which is exactly when salt film does the most damage, so we keep the schedule running year-round on any mild day.
